“New Yorker For A Day”
“Black is the queen of all colors.” – Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
And it just so happens to always be fashionable in the big apple called New York City. Elegant, and simple it conveys a feeling of sophistication, especially if applied to classic pieces like blazers, suits, or coats. In NYC you will even find those that wear all-black in the summer in the high 90s. Black in menswear, has always been around and is one of the basic colors hat are considered classic for a suit.
I started this outfit knowing that I would need to be warm and the black and grey scheme developed as I was getting dressed. I’m wearing my double-breasted blazer from H&M. Undoubtedly a very classic piece, probably only to be topped by the same style in Navy color. I didn’t want it to be too strict, so I did not go with a shirt underneath, but am wearing a dark grey heattech turtleneck from Uniqlo. In between, I am wearing a black Maison Martin Margiela cardigan – my best friend and roommate found it in a second hand store (… gotta love NYC). Whether thrown over the shoulders or on top of all of that, I have my Strellson virgin wool (from the very first shearing) coat in all-black also. In the bottom section, to keep the fabrics interesting went with dark grey pants that are also woolen, and continue the dapper look. Lastly, my shoes are wrapped up in my Barney’s Coop boots as a means to tone it down a notch once again.
Noted: black always works in NYC, and is usually a pretty save bet where ever you are. You can keep it interesting by layering as well as by combining different fabrics. If you want to wear it in your every day life, I’d suggest making it more casual by not wearing a shirt or oxfords, to make it a little less “stuck up”.
