Story-time: growing up I basically had three dads—my biological dad, my step-dad and my mom. Since my parents got divorced, I didn’t get to see my dad all that often, my step-dad worked a whole lot so he wasn’t around too much either, leaving me and my mom to ourselves most of the time. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love my dad, or that my relationship with my step-dad wasn’t great, it just meant my mom was around.
Father’s Day is right around the corner. And I think on Father’s Day we should first consider what qualifies you to be a “Father” aside from the biology, and I think being around is a big thing. A person who’s there for you, to show you through life, to show a boy how to become a man. While the definition of a “man” is changing every day in our modern society, there are still some things we traditionally think of in a father-son-relationship. Teaching you how to play catch, having “the talk” with you, and even showing you how to shave.
Today’s post is in partnership with Gillette, and in honor of the woman who taught me how to shave – my mother. Shaving your beard is particularly special in the process of becoming of a man, because it’s literally unique to our sex. But my mom still taught me, like she taught me a lot of things in life. I’ve said it before, and I consider myself lucky to be able to say it for the rest of my life: I wouldn’t be who I am today without her guiding me here, going far beyond what a mother usually does for her child, and that’s the kind of person we should honor on Father’s Day.
Ironically my whole family has been using Gillette razors for as long as I can remember, so what better way to reflect the unique respect and appreciation I have for the life lessons taught this Father’s Day season than by using a Gillette razor 😉
