Sydney Style: Dressing for an Australian Capitol

Sydney has a Los Angeles vibe to it – it’s laid back and trendy while still cosmopolitan. The seasons are opposite to what they are in North America, so while it’s just getting warm around these parts, it’s cooling off down under. I had a lot of options packed in my suitcases for both warmer and cooler weather, along with more casual and dressier options. I sort of waited until I got there to get a feel for the city’s vibe, and put together my outfits based on what I was feeling and seeing.

The first day was spent walking around and exploring the Sydney Harbor. The sun was out and it was warm enough for shorts. I packed a few pairs of shorts on this trip, but this pair from H&M ended up being the only pair I wore. Shorts are a tricky subject – they’re not always appropriate at all times (and if we’re being totally honest, for all men). Shorts are best worn if you’re in a coastal city, hanging out during the day and in vacation mode. Shorts do not mean business. Once the sun sets, pants are the best choice.

The trend in shorts right now is a mid-thigh length, tapered cut. They tend to look best on guys with athletic legs – so it’s a good idea to do some squat presses at the gym before shorts season begins.

I’m big into sneakers these days and they’re my go-to choice for daytime casual.

The second look in Sydney was a bit more downtown in vibe. You’ve probably noticed that jeans with ripped knees are a big trend in denim (at least on Instagram) and it feels like a modern take on the distressed look.

I kept the layering tones neutral. It was colder this day so I paired a light knit cashmere sweater with a navy shirt that I took off when it got warmer later in the day.

I forewent socks with both outfits as this just looks cleaner and cooler. Pro note: it helps to have baby powder you can sprinkle in the shoes and let them sit overnight so they air out and de-smell.
