Back to School: How to Get Hair Fit for Rock Royalty

Here’s something no one probably ever told you when you were young: good hair takes effort. For girls this is obvious: they grow up learning how to brush and blow dry their hair into smooth locks or voluminous curls. But guys? Maybe your dad taught you how to shave, but he most likely didn’t pass on any advice about what conditioner to use or what styling product you need for your frizzy mop. Eventually this wisdom might get passed down from a good hair stylist, but otherwise the modern man is grasping for information on the internet, often with conflicting advice.

That’s why I appreciate American Crew® products so much: they’re simple, straight-forward and functional. When I cut my hair short again, I needed to start using pastes and creams to create body and varied looks. I couldn’t just tie up my hair in a bun and call it a day. In some ways, having shorter hair requires more effort than longer hair.

American Crew® has done a little re-branding on some of my favorite products in time for the back-to-school existential challenge wherein you, your kids, or nephew is fretting about how to look cool while sitting in Calculus. The King of Rock ‘N’ Roll™ himself (and the purveyor of the pompadour) is the new face of the American Crew® brand. And who better – because you know he didn’t shake, rattle, and roll out of bed looking like that. That ‘do required some serious styling.

I start my haircare routine with the American Crew® 3-IN-1 Tea Tree Shampoo, Conditioner and Body Wash. If you don’t want to be burdened with a slew of different grooming potions, or your shower is so small you can only fit one product, this gets all the jobs done. Tea Tree is naturally cleansing and cooling, so it’s also a great product to use after the gym to wash away sweat and invigorate the scalp.

There are a few more products I use to get my every day look. You can use all of them or some of them to create a style that works for you. Here’s what I do:

After towel drying my hair from the shower, I take a small dab of Forming Cream on my index and middle finger, then rub my palms together and evenly distribute throughout my hair. This gives a little hold and texture to the hair, while adding natural shine. You can then comb your hair into place or go onto the next step…

Next, I take a comb and the blow dry and blow my hair backwards. This helps create the Elvis lift and dimension to hair. I then apply Fiber™, which imparts thickness and still more hold. This particular product is great for thinning hair as it helps texturize and create fullness. By this step, you’ve got a polished hairstyle that works well with all looks, from school to office. You can stop here or go onto the next step…

Lastly, for the finishing touches I apply a little bit of Defining Paste, just here and there to manipulate individual locks into behaving the way you want. It sounds like a lot of effort and products, but the end result is a pretty cool look that could withstand a hurricane and a jail house rock.
