Watches & Wonders

Miami. Sunshine. Watches. Cars. And amazing people. What a weekend it was strolling around the Miami Design District under the 80 degree sun looking at the most stunning fine watches from all over the world. The invitation to the new Watches & Wonders show by the Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie was an honor, and I’ll have to admit I walked in there pretty much a blank slate. I didn’t know too much about fine watches, the craftsmanship that goes into every single minuscule piece of the watches, but that appreciation increased quickly beyond “just” the design aspect of the watches, which was what I mostly cared about.. and obviously still care about, just now among other things.

I was obviously familiar with a few of the brands that presented at the show, most distinctly the Piaget and IWC brands, the former of which I own, and the latter of which I borrowed from Bryant, as you can see in the shots above (thanks, dude!).  Vacheron Constantin was one of the brands that really stood out, which I actually hadn’t heard too much about prior. But every single one of the exhibitors had time pieces in their collection that were to die for: A. Lange & Söhne, Panerai, Tagheuer, Hublot, Cartier, Jaeger-Le Coultre, Bulgari, Audemars Piguet, Parmigiani, … and that was still not all of them.

Beyond “just” the watches, the people on the trip were amazing, gorgeous vintage cars were on display, drinks were had and laughs shared. Congratulations to Watches & Wonders for an incredible first show, I’ll be looking forward to the next one!

Perhaps the lack of viewers had something to do with the lack of daytime coverage. I used to be able to watch the Olympics during the day, no later than 11:00 a.m. on weekdays and 12:00 p.m. on weekends. I know that now a lot of people just follow what they want online, but I used to be glued to the tv or the radio during the Olympics, as much of the day as possible. We watched all the medal ceremonies, and shared the pride of the Olympians who represented their countries. I noticed that this Olympics as well as the winter Olympics 4 years ago, there are so few medal ceremonies. I don”t want to watch them online, I want to watch them on the TV with my family. I thoroughly enjoyed the events that I watched this winter. But Perhaps NBC should run more events during the daytime as they have in the past. Everyone can live for 2 weeks without daytime soaps and talk-shows. The Olympics don”t happen that often, just pick up regular programming when the Olympics are finished.
